It's game day and I'm bored so have been looking at the league table.
Basically we obviously have improved going forward immensely and for me the better the weather gets (I've dusted the budgie smugglers off for today's blisteringly hot summer rugby day out) we will score more and more + Vidot edging very close to his debut. But our defence is still just not good enough, when we have scored the wonderful free flowing tries we have we should not be negative in the points difference.
For me the most important signing the club can now make is a high quality defensive coach, Watson seems to have the attack sorted but the defence hasn't really improved, we can't simply rely on the backs outscoring the opposition week in week out.

So I've had a bit of time on my hands and thought I'd look at the average points scored and conceded over the last few years. Watching the games it's felt mostly to me that we are defending better as a unit and as individuals but we seemed to be conceding 20+ in most games and 30+ in quite a few. So.... In 2016 we've scored 346 points in 13 games - average 26.6 points per game. That is a try a game better than anything over the whole last few years - 2012 average was 22.9 and 2014 was 22.5. Last year it was a measley 19.4 (excluding the middle 8s) and lowest was 2013 at 16.1? . I expected this year to be better it was surprised by how much better it is What about defence? So far this season we've conceded an average of 26.4 points a game. Last year it was 26.8 (again excl middle 8s) so a marginal improvement. Our best was 2014 with 25.7 per game. 2012 was 31.2 and 2013 was a whopping 35.3. So this season we have maintained the improved defence but not made any improvements. I thought there may have been more of an improvement and I think we'll have to make more improvement if we are to stand a chance of the top 8 I know this is a long winded way of proving what we all intuitively know but thought it set it out nicely

Interesting post, redunderthebed. It shows that we are improving in both attack and defense as an average, although if you want to improve those stats it may be worth looking at what the mean score across the Sl was in each year and see if that has a bearing on our improvement. I'd suspect that the improvement is understated as teams like Leeds and Hudds (Teams that were top of the pile or near enough over the last few seasons) are probably skewing the stats for this season somewhat. I can see an improvement in our defense, it's just that I can see that we have a way to go before our Defense catches-up with our attack. When it does though, I think we'll sit comfortably in the top half of the table.
