Bill Burgess was a top class winger and also a top class person, I remember in the week that he had signed for us I was watching an A team match and was stood talking to the fans in the old Popular Side Stand as it was then,it later on became known as The Shed.RIP Bill.

One of the finest wingers I have ever seen. If he hadn’t been flattened in the first ten seconds at Wembley in 1969 we might have won that game.
I remember going up to Whitehaven to watch us play and the pitch was a quagmire. Everyone on the pitch was struggling to run at speed- except for Bill Burgess who seemed to glide at speed over the mud as it did not seem to affect him. What a winger.
It’s very sad to read of his passing. Rest in Peace, Bill. My condolences and sympathy go out to his family and friends at this sad time.

Signed at the same time as Colin Dixon, I think. Dennis Hartley elbowed him in the face straight from the kick off at Wembley in 69, and he played on, although clearly concussed. One of the Salford greats.

Signed 20th December 1968, first match against Wakefield Trinity Heritage Number 669 and as RedDave has already said he seemed to glide along the surface even in the days of winter rugby.

Billy Burgess was my first Salford hero. He had speed and seemed to glide across the ground. He regularly went the length of the pitch and a joy to watch.
Rip Billy from someone who was grateful for all the happy memories in my early teens.
Condolences to all your family.

One moment that stands out for me was at Wilderspool when in the dying minutes he dodged several players as he flew down the wing to score and win us the game. I can still picture it.
Everything already said about him here is so true.
Thank you Bill.
