Good interview with Sheens. I urge everyone to take out twenty minutes for a listen to the podcast.
I thought it was shocking that he revealed that Dobson has counted on quota for the last two years when he shouldn't have due to the RFL cocking-up again.
Shambles.

Are you being serious about Dobson?
That is the type of thing that is going to make the Doc walk, he already thinks (rightly in my view) that the RFL treat us quite poorly. How on earth can a body charged with running a professional sport make a mistake like this?
Give credence to the calls for them to resign.

Unfortunately I'm not jesting.
Tim always talks sense and he had some really interesting things to say about the state of RL in this country. Worth a listen.

Just got back after a few days away and listened to the podcast and I must say that both Tim Sheens and Carlo Napoitano were excellent answering the questions put by Jack and Trevor. The answer that Tim gave over Michael Dobson being classed as on the quota when he shouldn't have been had Jack and Trevor gasping and then laughing in amazement and the way that Tim answered it was diplomacy at it finest. Questions were asked and answers were given in a clear and concise manner and they were both a pleasure to listen to.

When you consider the injury and disciplinary crises last year we might have been able to bring in a decent overseas signing it just shows how an 'error' like this can have an effect.
Boggles, the mind just boggles.

Just listened to the podcast and as always Sheens comes across as a great font of knowledge about most things RL.
His views on a draught system are interesting in that he knows it's just about the only real way to get a totally level playing field in the UK (when we lag so far behind the NRL our best players are always going to have their heads turned by much bigger contracts), as he alluded to the haves are not likely to agree to a system where they don't get all the very best players from an area steeped in RL when the have nots Salford or if they return London would then get a better chance of building a squad with the required depth and talent for a sustained spell in SL.
Not that I doubted Carnster but to actually hear that the RFL have actually had a player registered as counting on the quota for 2 seasons when he shouldn't have been is appalling, is there no form of recompense for Salford for this or is it a case of swizzle happens deal with it? All that said who on earth at Salford didn't figure out straight away that he shouldn't been on the cap and raised this issue? if we did and the RFL said he did but then realised is grounds for real concern and needs to be looked at in a very serious way.
Think we can gather from this that we have seen Tommy Lee play his last game, pity as he is a player who always gave his all and is a very good club captain, would be nice if he is going to Saints that he gets the send of at the last game of the play off's he deserves. But will release a decent chunk of cap and I'm sure the new kids from Warrington and York will not be on as much combined and offer Salford such a bright future in the hooking position.
Whenever I hear Carlo speak his pride for the city and for Salford as a club is there for all to see I wonder why on earth he isn't involved with Salford in some capacity, ex international coach, ex player and passionate Salfordian. As a club we have employed less qualified people without his drive and enthusiasm on very high wages with little return.
Most worrying was the question about the Doc staying and Sheens as good as saying the yardstick will be the numbers of bums on seats, when we have London coming I doubt we'll break 3000, Featherstone we might scrape 3500 and should get up around the 4000 for the two SL sides, we might have got a bumper crowd if we'd have had Leeds at home and they needed to win. That said if we finish top, play well and look settled the Doc might see it as the undoubted progress that it is.

Thoughtful post,MR. I agree entirely that ,if the Club identied the Dobson issue and were rejected by the RFL, then its one thing but ,if the Club didn't know either and just presumed he was on the quota then someone needs flogging. That doesn't absolve the RFL,quite the reverse, but did the club just sit on its hands ? Speaking of which,if it's really down to bums on seats then he'll be offski

Surely Dobson himself , or his agent at least, should have known if he was a quota player or not. After all, if he were to be looking for a new club, that could make all the difference.

I think the Dobson thing depends on how the rule is implemented. I personally don't know how it operates at Club level. Does the RFL alone determine quota spots and the Clubs abide by the ruling? Does it rely on Clubs submitting quota dispensations then they rule on that? Or does it lie somewhere between the Club and the RFL?
Sheens diplomatic answer to who was at fault was to say 'Well, it wasn't us.' Suggests that the RFL have more direct control of who is on and off quota than the Clubs.

Speaking of which,if it's really down to bums on seats then he'll be offski It very much sounded like that will have a big baring on the Docs decision making, I suspect just as much his family will also be very influential, it is telling that it used to be a Koucash day out, Wife, children and his Brother used to attend and I only saw him leave with one daughter last Friday so maybe they have had enough of RL (just a theory and by no means fact). I know it's easy for me as I invest nothing but a season ticket and beer tokens to the club but he would be much better off making this decision in 12 months when this years vastly improved team has had a chance to further strengthen and make a decent tilt at a top 8/6 place and to perform better in the cup.

It's been said many times before but it's a professional game run by rank amateurs. The trouble is that when the lunatics have taken over the asylum it's bloody difficult to be rid of them

Dobson counted on the quota... that's unbelievable! Both the club and the RFL need to look at how this has happened. Shocking stuff, but not surprising really.

With bums on seats Salford i'm afraid do not help themselves. The amount of people I have dragged down to games only for a poor performance or non advertisement impacts massively. People are just switched off. Back at the willows this was mitigated somewhat by there not being as much to do in other aspects of life or being within walking distance to a lot of people but society has changed, getting to the ground for a majority by foot is not an option and to attend a game now takes 'effort' where before it did not so much.
All the off field politics have also not helped this year (again) and to your average Joe who doesn't attend games and shows a fleeting interest there is no incentive to make that effort to come along. This is on the back of how many false dawns and that is why numbers continue to fall for us as a club in my view.
RL in general is on the decline. The game at SL level is a poor spectacle when you compare matches to yesteryear at the same level and I don't believe offers the same excitement and enjoyment that it once did.
There are other factors as well here such as local engagement from the club to schools, local clubs etc, and although has improved significantly the past 12/18 months, is still needs to be so much better.
The damage has been a long time in being made and i'm sorry, it is not going to turn around as we continually shoot ourselves in the foot.

We're doomed ! Thanks for the motivational post. We are where we are. I'm not the Doctors biggest fan but he's put in masses of effort, for which he can't be faulted. Even at the Willows, and the perceived better games of yesteryear it was costing John Wilkinson massively to support the club. The bottom line is that Salford can't support a Super League club without a benefactor .

what do you want me to say then bonitared? That everything will be fine and numbers will increase? I am not a pesamist and really want the club to flurish and do contribute in the real world to attempt to help the game and Salford grow in the area. I was merely stating points. I am sure for every one of us "Die Hards", we can name at least half a dozen people who used to go to the willows, even back when we were in a lot worse position than we are in now because the factors i mentioned in my post weren't an issue back then.
The doc and salford are trying to a degree but there could be so much more done to make it even better. I know he was not a well liked bloke but last year Martin Vickers worked a lot more to promote games and i had conversations with him on how they could increase numbers just by little things. This year even that stream of input has dried up. Last year the club employed a dedicated PR company to promote the club and games for a time but that went by the way side for certain reasons. These days the only promotion that is seen is either through facebook or twitter.
The club at this time has this idea of running well before it has managed to master the art of walking. We are taking steps but we are still far from being steady on our feet. I genuiney hope that Marwan stays and continues to do what he is doing because I think he is good for us and the game but just because things haven't gone his way the past couple of years, he needs to see the bigger picture that for almost 35 years this club has been on a downward spiral and has seen so many false dawns that to a lot they have simply given up. Go well next year and hang around the top 6 consistently we would increase our crowd average by at least 2k of locals alone.
