Hi Everyone, nice to be able to chat about RL and not read constant posts about this person that person etc. Anyway can anyone please tell me how or why Gareth O'Brien is still being picked ? For the past few games he has been atrocious. I know there are a lot of you who do rate him a lot but I just can not see it. Evalds will be off if he does not get game time and at the moment and previously I feel he is a much better option.

Totally agree with you Prestwichred he looked like a rabbit in the headlights at Leeds. Since then he looks like he's scared to get tackled, wanting the ball to go dead so he doesn't have to run it back in. The guy is not a fullback!!

Disagree entirely, I was very dubious when he started at fb particularly ahead of niall, but he's been a revelation in my opinion. He must get more big hits than any other player and just get back on with it. Yeh he made a few mistakes against wire, and that widnes magic game also springs to mind, but to be it doesn't seem to affect his confidence he just carries on trying to do something, he doesn't hide. I really like the guy, he's been a great addition to the squad. It's all opinions though isn't it , I may well be wrong it wouldn't be the first time! But he's been one of my favourite players this season.

GOB has had some good games this season, and he has also had some stinkers but still gets selected no matter what. GOB's obvious qualities in his game are third pivot tactics which are the only strengths I can see to his role at fullback. He is suspect under the high ball, woeful at bringing the ball return, lightweight in defence, and has an intermittent kicking game. There's no doubting his third pivot play has been our main artillery in the attack, which is the reason he's pipped Niall each week to selection.
Maybe if we didn't rely on third pivot play too much and had the necessary strike play in our Centres and wingers, Niall would have got more game time. I like both players and can see both sides of the coin, however, Niall should have had been given a chance after one of GOB's howling displays. You can bet your bottom dollar Evald's would be dropped if he made the same blunders.

We play like an NRL side. At least we try. Both Sheens and Ian 'To be Fair' Watson (Just listen ) want to play this way, and it's reaped more rewards this season than any other Salford tactic in SL. It can only happen because of GOB at FB. I really like both players but they are a vastly different style to each other. Evalds is pacey, hard to stop, and a great support player with average high ball skills. GOB is a quick, ball-playing back with the RL brain of a HB. The coaches like the extra pivot, especially with our large outside backs, and being lightweight in the pack means that we rely more heavily on the backs making the gaps rather than punching holes in defenses. If our pack is lightweight that reliance is paramount on effective work from the HB and FB to find/exploit holes/gaps. That's why GOB is picked every week. Until the make-up of the squad changes, possibly in the off-season, our reliance on these tactics will endure. It's really tough for Niall after having a good season previously, but I'm not annoyed because the system in place which can't find a home for Niall is providing us with a very potent attack that is showing rewards.
